Frame November 2023 Update

November 21, 2023

‍Frame is a web-based metaverse that makes it super easy for you or your organization to carve out a corner of the metaverse. This gives you a social, spatial canvas to interact with your team or the world at large, design an accessible 3D space that represents your brand or community, and much more.

We want to make online interactions more personal, playful, and powerful, and we want to make it easy for you to enter the world of spatial computing.

Let's dive into our November update. We've got a few key new features.

Doodler

Fundamentally, we try to give Frame different capabilities than what you can find in a pure video call. We know that users love our Whiteboard feature, which provides a 2D canvas within the 3D environment for simple, collaborative doodling. Take a look:

2D doodles in a 3D space

That's wonderful, but with our new Doodle tool, you can draw in the 3D space itself with other people. Here's what we mean:

‍

This lets you do a few interesting things:

  • basic 3D sketching / ideating with others
  • decorating your Frame with some custom lines
  • drawing 3D lines directly on the walls of Frame environments

Right now, the Doodle too is somewhat limited. You can change the color and width of your line. This isn't Tiltbrush here. That said, we have quite a lot of other features coming to the Doodler that will let you do more:

  • doodle in VR or mobile
  • tweak the visuals of the line in tons of other ways

For now, despite its simplicity we hope you find creative ways to leverage it!

Post-Processing Effects

While this is a simplification, post-processing effects are kind of like Instagram filters for your 3D environments. They are effects that get applied to your camera's rendering pipeline. Be warned - these are very powerful but must be used with caution depending on the kinds of hardware you are targeting for your experience. We always do our best to adjust various settings to ensure Frame will play nice with a wide variety of devices, but some of these post-processing settings will really push the limits.

You've got bloom, depth of field, sharpen, anti-aliasing, glow-layer, and more!

You'll see the new post-processing effects available in your Frame settings in the "ENVIRONMENT AND PERFORMANCE" section.

New Environments

We've got three awesome new environments for you to choose from in our Environment Picker: Holiday, Classroom, and Large Classroom

Miscellaneous Goodies

  • You will now see Spectators in the People Menu
  • Our AI-powered NPC bots are now using GPT-4 instead of GPT 3.5
  • There's a new "What's New" popup you will see when Frame has gotten an update since your last visit. You can hide these if you want.
  • New Frame setting for "megaphones enabled by default" if you want people to come in with megaphones already on
  • The audio through a screen share sounds a lot better and comes through in stereo!
  • There's now a way to visualize the different available sound ranges for any assets with spatial audio

Coming Up

We're going to let you write your own custom code for use in Frame. Using Javascript. Stay tuned.
